October 22nd, 2009 Award-winning columnist and author David Magee will read from and sign his book, The Education of Mr. Mayfield. It chronicles the struggle of African-American artist M.B. Mayfield to further his art and education while facing racism and segregation and provides a look at some courageous white Southerners who helped his cause through a number of creative ways, including smuggling him into lectures under the guise of a professorial assistant. Magee, who resides in Tennessee with his wife and children, is the author of 12 nonfiction books and is co-owner of the independent book store, Rock Point Books. www.malaprops.com
